Softball Season Preview

The Covenant softball team is primed and ready to tackle their final season in the Circle City Conference. Last year, the Warriors ended the season in the sectional championship against a very strong Cascade team, finishing just barely under .500 with a 12-13 overall record. Coach Rick Redelman begins his fourth season with Covenant, his second as head coach of the program. He is excited and expectant for what this group of young ladies can do this spring! “I couldn’t ask for a better group of girls. They all work so hard and do the most with the talent God gave them. Coaching girls with various levels of experience is challenging, but I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he said. “Seeing the progress of young players like Avery Bassett and Anabelle Davis from their first season to now brings as much joy to me as anything else in coaching. Another player returning from her first season with us is junior Lilly Armstrong. Lilly has shown a new fire and has obviously worked hard in the off-season to improve her arm strength, speed, and hitting. I can’t wait to see what she’s able to accomplish this season.” Juniors Ariannah Jones and Julia Hoffman return as starters for the third straight season. Ariannah is a fierce competitor and is at her best commanding the pitching circle, but don’t discount her with a bat in her hands–she is a tough out as a leadoff! Newcomers include a very talented trio of freshmen and a junior transfer, Coco Bartels, who will play a key role at first base and as a relief pitcher. The three freshmen have the potential to grow into exceptional players if they continue down the path they are on. Marissa Silva has an elite arm from SS and is a smooth defender. She’s new to pitching, but it’s hard to tell it by the way she throws. Avery Bennett will play a key role for the Warriors this year, filling the shoes of four-year starter Emma Groves at catcher. Moriah Armstrong also shows huge upside with her strength and versatility. Coach Redelman said this about Moriah: “She has a ton of raw natural ability and I can’t wait to see how she develops as we work her in at several spots this season including C, 3B, and 1B.” The Warriors round out the roster with three outstanding senior leaders and captains in Ava Davis, Halle Tindall, and Alivia Tucker. Tucker will start at 3B and relieve Coco at 1B on occasion. Look for her to up her offensive production this year as an experienced hitter. Halle Tindall busted out as a power hitter last year clubbing three home runs and nearly doubling her 2022 average. Ava Davis also came on very strong at the end of the year last year and made a few stellar plays at 2B for in sectionals, so you can expect to see her flash the leather on defense. Covenant will head out on the road to open the season against North Putnam on Tuesday, April 2, and the home opener will be against Cardinal Ritter on Wednesday, April 3 at 5:30 p.m. Come out and support your 2024 CCHS softball team!
