The Warrior football team (12-0) secured the program’s first Sectional Championship this past Friday.
Covenant defeated the Lutheran Saints (9-2), 46-38, on a warm, November evening.
The Warriors got off to a slow start in the game. After drawing three flags in the first four plays of the game, Covenant fumbled the football, which was recovered by Lutheran’s Jacob Roberts for a touchdown to put the Saints up in the first couple minutes of play. Covenant had to punt on it’s next possession where Lutheran took advantage and drove up the field, resulting in another touchdown by junior Montasi Clay on a 6 yard TD run. Lutheran led 0-14 at the 7:44 mark in the first quarter. The Warriors were able to get on the scoreboard at the end of the quarter, though, hitting a 23 yard field goal by senior Jackson Brough.
The Warriors scored the next two touchdowns in the second quarter. At the 8:14 mark, sophomore Brad Nardi was able to force a fumble that was recovered by senior Gage Coffey for a 39 yard return. Covenant was able to stop Lutheran on the next drive, which then resulted in a completed pass from senior Austin Frazier to senior Micah Wilson for a 69 yard touchdown. The PAT was good, putting the Warriors up 17-14. On the next drive, Lutheran worked down the field to setup a 28 yard field goal to tie the game up 17-17. Prior to the half, though, the Warriors took the lead with a 37 yard field by Brough to put Covenant up 20-17.
The second half was a battle with 4 touchdowns being scored within 2 minutes of each other in the third quarter. To start, Lutheran progressed the ball down the field to setup a 3 yard touchdown by Montasi Clay. On the next drive, Frazier completed a pass to junior Adrian Terry for a 71 yard touchdown. Lutheran regained possession and were able to capitalize on a 22 yard touchdown pass from senior Blake White to senior Joseph Faubion. The Warriors weren’t fazed, however, as Terry returned a 90 yard kick for the touchdown. The PAT was blocked, but Covenant led 33-31. Prior to the quarter ending, White and Faubion connected again for a 29 yard touchdown to put Lutheran up 33-38.
The game was back-and-forth in the fourth quarter, but Covenant’s def
ense proved to be the difference-maker, forcing four turnovers (three interceptions and one fumble) in the quarter alone. The Warriors were able to really shift the momentum about 7:30 into the quarter when Adrian Terry recovered a fumble at the 25
yard line to set up the next scoring drive. Covenant worked their way down the field drawing a crucial pass interference call on one play and roughing the passer on another. Eventually they broke the gridlock when Gage Coffey punched through for a 2 yard touchdown with 5:25 left in the game. Covenant attempted a 2-point conversation that was no good, but the Warriors led 39-38. On the next drive, Lutheran attempted a couple long throws, one of which was picked off by Brough for his first interception in the quarter. The Warriors capitalized on the drive and were able to score on a 1 yard touchdown for Coffey’s third TD on the night with 2:28 left to go. The Warriors weren’t in the clear just yet.
Lutheran was able to get the ball down to the 30 yard line to setup a scoring opportunity. Senior Alex Coleman was able to apply pressure on the QB to force a throw that Brough intercepted at the 10 yard line. The Warriors were able to work down the clock to secure the win!
The Sectional win is a program first. Frazier passed for 334 yards while the rushing game resulted in 189 yards. The Warriors were also able to force six turnovers (three fumbles, three interceptions) on the night.
Covenant now looks to secure a Regional Championship as they face South Putnam on Friday. The game will be played at Brebeuf Jesuit HS at 7:30pm.
