Girls Varsity Soccer · Sectional Champions!!!

The Girls Soccer team (5-12-1) held on to send Saturday afternoon’s IHSAA Sectional #42 championship game to overtime, where the Lady Warriors knocked off host Speedway HS 4-3 in a penalty kick shootout.

CCHS struggled through a difficult regular season schedule in a rebuilding year in 2020.  But Covenant picked up some momentum towards the end of the season, and was able to defeat Greenwood Christian Academy in the first round of the sectional on Thursday night.  Despite outshooting the Lady Cougars 33-1, Covenant could not find the back of the net, and went to overtime and a shootout.  Senior goalkeeper made three saves and a fourth shot ricocheted off the post, as CCHS won 2-0.  That win advanced the Lady Warriors to the final, where they face #16 ranked Speedway.  SHS upset #10 ranked Scecina Memorial HS 3-1 in their semifinal on Thursday.

On Saturday, Covenant seemed to dominate much of the action early, which resulted in a goal from Junior Ella Longoria.  Longoria was able to work a strong shot on goal from the top left side of the box, and the force of the shot went through the SHS keeper to make it 1-0 with just over 13 minutes left in the first half.  Speedway evened the score eleven minutes into the second half on a Covenant own goal, as the play and scoring chances became much more even in the second forty minutes.  Neither team was able to break the tie through the final 29 minutes of regulation or two overtime periods, which sent the final to a shootout.

Senior Kayla Dancler opened up the shootout with a shot that she buried in the left side to give the Lady Warriors an early advantage.  The teams traded makes and misses over the next several shots as Minaya again came through with a couple of saves to keep the score tied at 3-3.  Sophomore Kylee Sebree came up as Covenant’s final shooter of the first round, and promptly netted her shot past the Sparkplug goalkeeper.

The win gives Covenant their third sectional title in Girls Soccer in the past four seasons.  CCHS will now advance to face #1 ranked Park Tudor (18-2), who won Sectional #43 by defeating Triton Central HS 8-0, in the first round of Regional #11 at Park Tudor on Saturday, October 17.  The PT/CCHS game will kick off at 10:00a, followed by the other regional semifinal, which pits the Sectional #41 champion (Southmont HS) against the Sectional #44 champion (Centerville HS).  The Regional #11 final will be played at 7:00p on Saturday at Park Tudor.  2020 IHSAA Girls Soccer Class 1A State Tournament bracket.
