The Boys Basketball team (16-7, 4-1) had a sluggish start to the season finale last night at Cascade HS, but withstood the slow start on their way to an 84-64 win over the Cadets (8-14).
The Cadets came out on their Senior Night, shooting the ball well. CHS jumped out to a 13-5 lead in the first four minutes due to their hot shooting. But the Covenant full-court pressure and the Warriors’ offensive execution and depth narrowed the gap to 18-15 Cascade by the end of the first quarter. Covenant took control of the game in the second, as they outscored the Cadets 25-14 in the quarter to take a 40-32 lead into halftime. The third quarter looked much the same, as CCHS pulled away with a 26-13 third frame.
Senior Noah Hedrick had a strong night off of the bench, shooting 5-for-7 from 3-point range on his way to team-high 22 points. Hedrick also collected 6 rebounds and 2 assists on the night. Junior Trey Flatt added 19 points as well, but his strength was more on the defensive end, as he tallied 10 deflections and 2 steals to help pace the Warriors’ defense. Senior Cam Shurig was Covenant’s third double-figure scorer, chipping in 13 points. Senior Gus Chikamba was the Warriors’ team leader in assists with four. Senior Mason Tharp led Cascade with 23 points in the loss.
Covenant will now be off until their Sectional #42 opener versus T.C. Howe CHS on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:00pm at Heritage Christian. The Warriors will have their work cut out for themselves as they seek their first sectional title since 2011, as Sectional #42 is one of the toughest sectionals in the state in Class 2A. University HS enters the final week of the regular season ranked #5 2A, while Park Tudor, UHS, and Covenant all ranked in the top eleven in the 2A Sagarin ratings this week.
