The Girls Basketball team (11-5, 2-2) dominated their first round matchup with Herron HS (3-10), defeating the Lady Achaeans, 77-17. The win will advance CCHS to the quarterfinals on Tuesday, where the #5 seeded Lady Warriors will face #4 seed Cardinal Ritter HS. CRHS defeated #13 seed George Washington CHS, 63-30 in their first round matchup this evening. Updated 2020 City Tournament bracket.
Covenant dominated Herron from the very beginning. CCHS used stifling half court defense early, that led to several transition baskets. Covenant also did a solid job of executing their offensive sets throughout to lead to easy baskets. The defensive stinginess continued throughout, as CCHS allowed just two points defensively after halftime.
Seniors Sania Borom and Ilani Williams-Harris and Sophomore Samara Douglas led a balanced scoring attack to saw four Lady Warriors score in double figures, with a fifth just a point away from it. Williams-Harris led all scorers with 17 points, while Borom and Douglas each netted 15 points in the lopsided win, while Sophomore Patty Chikamba scored 8 of her 11 points in the first half. Junior Bonnie Lew Ludlow, in her first game action of the season after suffering an ACL tear in June, scored nine points and played a very solid, all-around game. Her return can very easily provide some much needed depth and basketball acumen for the thin Lady Warriors roster.
Covenant will travel to Ritter on Tuesday night for a 6:00pm quarterfinal tipoff. CCHS is in the midst of six-game win streak, with their last loss a 47-43 loss to the Lady Raiders just before Christmas.
In other City Tournament action Monday night, #3 seed Bishop Chatard HS rolled over #14 seed Emmerich Manual HS 74-23. #6 seeded C.A. Tindley AS cruised past #11 Scecina Memorial HS 56-31. #7 Arsenal Tech HS outlasted #10 seed T.C. Howe CHS 52-44. #9 Crispus Attucks HS upset #9 Shortridge HS 45-36. Attucks will advance to face #1 Heritage Christian on Tuesday night. #2 Cathedral HS will host Arsenal Tech HS, while Bishop Chatard will host Tindley in the quarterfinals.
Tuesday’s winner will advance to the semifinals at Cathedral HS on Thursday evening. This year’s City Tournament finals will be played on Friday night at 7:30 pm. Both the semifinals and finals will be webcast on Indiana SRN.
