The Girls Volleyball team (7-20) picked up a win and a loss in the IHSAA Sectional #42 on Saturday, but the loss ended the Lady Warriors’ season.
CCHS was off for ten days since being eliminated from the City Tournament against Bishop Chatard HS in the quarterfinals last week. They opened up sectional play on Saturday morning versus T.C. Howe CHS. Covenant swept the Lady Hornets with ease, 3-0 (25-10, 25-6, 25-6). The win advanced CCHS to the final, where they matched up against Scecina Memorial HS (20-10). SMHS defeated Triton Central HS 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-21) in the other sectional semifinal on Saturday.
Covenant came into the final and played well. Scecina rallied in the first set to take a late lead and win the game 25-21. SMHS pulled away late in the second set for a 25-18 win. CCHS started the third set up well, but the Lady Crusaders came back again in a match of runs. Scecina rallied with two straight points after a timeout with CCHS leading 22-21. CCHS then took a timeout down late in the third game trailing 23-22. The final three points proved to be some more great back and forth action, but Scecina hung on for the 25-23 set win to clinch the match.
Sophomore Cadee Notter led CCHS with assists, handing out 12. Senior Sania Borom was strong hitting, picking up 12 kills. Freshman Dani Newport was not far behind Borom, tallying 9 kills. Seniors Avery Fowler and Lexie Bright played solid in the middle for CCHS, recording six and 3 kills respectively. Sophomore libero Bella Dart had 10 digs and an ace, while Sophomore Elizabeth Schafer chipped in six assists.
SMHS will move on to face Southmont HS (23-10), who defeated North Putnam HS in the Sectional #44 final. SMHS/SHS will be played in Regional #11 at Heritage Christian on Saturday, October 26 at 12:00n. HCS (26-4) swept Western Boone HS in the Sectional #43 final. The Lady Eagles will face Hagerstown HS (28-3), who defeated Knightstown HS 3-0 in the Sectional #41 final.
