The Boys Tennis team defeated Speedway HS 4-1 on Saturday morning at Ben Davis HS, to win their fourth consecutive IHSAA Sectional #2 title.
Senior Luke Susud picked up his 51st career victory, defeated Sr. Sar Moo 6-1, 6-1 to win the #1 Singles flight. Both doubles teams also took care of business in quick fashion, as Juniors Matthew Wilson and Graham Shelton won #1 Doubles (6-1, 6-1) and Junior Kyle Burris and Sophomore Jerry Chen swept #2 Doubles 6-0, 6-0.
Sophomore Brenner Lampton got out to a very strong start, jumping out to a 5-1 lead in the first set, but ended up falling to SHS Junior Ryan Pettigrew, 5-7, 4-6. Junior Joseph Bird picked up the fourth flight for the Warriors at #3 Singles. After dropping the first set 2-6, Bird rallied to win the flight with 6-1 wins in the second and third sets.
Susud becomes the first player in CCHS program history to be part of four sectional championship teams. Covenant has previously won three straight sectional titles (2009-11), but 2016-19 is the first four-peat in program history. Nathan Zumbrun (Class of 2013) was part of three sectional championship teams in 2009-11, and then advanced out of the sectional in 2012 as an individual, even though the Warriors lost to Ben Davis HS this year, advancing all the way to the state singles final.
Covenant will face Zionsville CHS in the first round of IHSAA Regional #1 at Plainfield HS on Tuesday at 4:30 pm. ZCHS won Sectional #4 by defeating host Lebanon HS 5-0 on Friday night. The Regional #1 final will be at PHS on Thursday at 5:00 pm. Click here for the IHSAA Boys Tennis State Tournament webpage.
