Boys Varsity Tennis · Wilson/Shelton Fall in the Tightest of Matches

The Boys Tennis Tournament wrapped up on Tuesday night with the resumption of the #1 Doubles City Final.  The City Finals were played on Monday night at Riverside Park, but the #1 Doubles flight final was suspended on Monday night due to darkness.

Covenant Juniors Matthew Wilson and Graham Shelton, this year’s #1 seeds going into the tournament, were facing #3 seeds Alex Pohl/Sam Black from Cathedral HS.  CCHS had defeated Shortridge HS and #4 seed Heritage Christian to advance to the finals, while Cathedral had beaten Crispus Attucks and #2 seed Bishop Chatard HS to reach the finals.  Shelton/Wilson won the first set 7-5.  CHS rallied to win the second set 6-7 (5-7) in a tiebreaker.  The Irish got a little bit of breathing space as darkness descended late Monday night, taking a 1-4 advantage into the suspension.

Wilson/Shelton came out strong as play resumed on Tuesday afternoon, winning the first three points, as both Wilson and Shelton held their serves while also breaking Freshman Sam Black’s serve to tie the match at 4-4.  Pohl held his serve, as did Wilson, tying the third set at 5-5.  The Warriors were again able to break Black’s serve to take a 6-5 advantage.  Cathedral though also broke Shelton’s serve to tie the match again 6-6.  The Irish won the third and deciding set in another tiebreaker 5-7.

Cathedral won the team title of the City Tournament with 46 points, followed by Bishop Chatard HS with 23, Heritage Christian 18, CCHS 16, Cardinal Ritter HS 10, Scecina Memorial HS/Shortridge HS with 5 points each, Crispus Attucks 4, and Arsenal Tech with 1 point. 2019 Boys Tennis City Tournament brackets (final results).
