The Football team improved to 2-2 on the young season on Friday night, defeating Emmerich Manual HS (0-4) 21-0.
CCHS got on the scoreboard early, as they took their second possession 57 yards in three plays, capped by a 37 yard pass from Junior quarterback Austin Frazier to Junior Alex Coleman. Junior Trey Flatt got the Warriors in the end zone a second time with 3:47 remaining in the first half, as his four yard run completed a 21 play, 79 yard drive to give Covenant a 14-0 lead at halftime.
After neither team scored in the third quarter, Flatt found the end zone again to help seal the game away, with a 27 yard run.
The Covenant defense also stood tall in the win. The defense shut out the Redskins, but made several stands in the second half to keep Manual off the scoreboard. EMHS turned the ball over on downs after the Warriors stuffed Sophomore quarterback D’Fayebeon Pittman on a fourth and goal inside the Covenant five yard line. The defense also denied the Redskins on a shot to the end zone late in the game to maintain the shutout.
Frazier was 11-for-24 for 127 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions in the win. Junior Gage Coffey rushed the ball 22 times for 108 yards. Pittman led EMHS with 59 yards rushing and 81 yards through the air.
Covenant was honored at halftime of the game by the Crossroads Officials Association. The COA selected Covenant as their 2018-19 Sportsmanship Award this past year.
Covenant will host Charles A. Tindley Accelerated School on Friday, September 20 at Zionsville West MS at 7:00 pm. Tindley improved to 3-0 on the season with a 56-0 win over Anderson Prep Academy this past Friday. CCHS will hold it’s annual Homecoming versus Tindley, as well as honoring the seniors on the football, cross country, and girls golf teams before the game.
