The Warriors lost in a 4-3 thriller Tuesday night at Danville CHS. Covenant went down 2-0 in the first half off of some missed clearances and defensive breakdowns. Danville outshot CCHS 9-2 in the first half, however, Covenant came out fired up and determined in the second half. Covenant put the Danville Warriors on their heels with several corners and shots early in the final forty minutes. Eventually, they were able to break through when Junior Conor Brockett connected with Junior Art Hinton on a through ball for Art’s first goal on the season.
CCHS pressed Danville and were able to turn them over leading to the second goal assisted by Junior Gabe Wilson. Sophomore Benji Oles collected Wilson’s pass and found himself in a 1v1 at the top of the box where he was able to cut across to his right foot and curve a ball to the back corner. Shortly after, Freshman Jacob Rader found the ball on his foot after turning Danville over where he was able to connect with Hinton. Hinton was then able to tally an assist to teammate Junior Caleb Crane, who shot from outside the 18 where the keeper mishandled the ball giving Covenant a 3-2 lead.
In the remaining minutes, the Warriors conceded a foul near their sideline outside of the 18, which would lead to a cross to the back post where Danville was able to finish off a header. With 30 seconds left to go, Covenant conceded a penalty kick where Danville was able to secure their home opener 4-3. Covenant was able to tally six shots on frame and five corners. Despite their four goals, Freshman Angelo Luca had a standout game in his career opener, registering ten saves.
CCHS hits the home pitch for the first time this season on Thursday, as they open up Circle City Conference play as they host the Braves of Brebeuf Jesuit Preparatory for a V/JV doubleheader at 5/6:30p.
