The Softball team (16-7-1) made program history last night with a 13-2 win over Shakamak HS, giving the Lady Warriors their first regional title. CCHS, back-to-back winners of Sectional #58, hosted the Lady Lakers, winners of Sectional #57.
Shakamak got off to a quick start, as Junior Maddeline Gilbert led off the game with a home run to left field off of Covenant starter Sophomore Aubrey Jones. Senior Jeslyn Lambermont followed that up with a double. But Jones worked out of trouble, giving up just the run one, stranding runners on second and third to get out of the top of the first inning. CCHS did not take long to answer back, as Senior Bailey Everett rocketed a no doubt homer to left to even the score at one.
The score remained tied until Freshman Morgan Yeater bounced a ball off of the concession stand beyond centerfield to give the Lady Warriors a 2-1 lead leading off the bottom of the second inning. Covenant then blew the game open with four runs in the third inning with some defensive help from SHS and some timely hitting, before piling on seven runs in the fourth to seal the Lakers’ fate. Senior Kaitlynne Gilbert closed out the Shakamak scoring with a solo home run in the top of the fifth inning, before Jones closed out the Lakers. Jones pitched a complete game (five innings), giving up two runs on two solo home runs, allowing nine hits and striking out four.
Yeater went 2-for-3 with three RBI, while Everett, A. Jones, and Sophomore Alexis Priesthoff each drove in two runs. Sophomore Brooklyn Bond and Senior Sydney Jones each had RBIs as well.
The Lady Warriors advance to face Lutheran HS (18-7-1) in the Class 1A South Semi-state semifinal at North Daviess HS on Saturday.
