Boys Varsity Football · Bowman Named Football Coach

The Covenant Athletic Department named Coach Tony Bowman its second head coach in program history this week.

The Covenant Athletic Department is pleased to announce the hiring of Tony Bowman as the second football coach in program history.  Bowman replaces Larry McWhorter, who was hired in 2014 to start and lead the program.  McWhorter posted a 29-9 varsity record over five seasons at the helm of the Warriors Football program.  McWhorter stepped down from his CCHS coaching position in early February.

Bowman comes to CCHS with a lengthy resume of experience.  He is a retired Marine, serving both in the States and overseas.  He also has a lengthy list of coaching stops at high school, college, and military levels, in Indiana, Iowa, California, Kentucky, Okinawa, and Japan.  Most recently, Bowman served as Linebacker Coach/Assistant Academic Coordinator at Anderson University in 2018.

Bowman is extremely excited to lead the Warriors.  He has great passion to lead young men, both in the context of football, but more importantly, in the context of developing young men into leaders and strong believers who can have great impact on this world for Christ.  Athletic Director Andy Gossel said this about Coach Bowman: ” We’re extremely excited to have Coach Bowman come onto our coaching staff.  His passion and attention to detail will seem familiar to our guys from the foundation and structure to the program that Coach Mac has laid.  His strong faith is critical to what Covenant Athletics strives to do: using the medium of athletics to help point our student athletes to Jesus Christ and equip students to a life of scholarship, leadership, and service.”

Coach Bowman and his wife live in Cicero, IN.  He serves on several committees at Cicero Christian Church.

Bowman will hold his first team meeting on Thursday (5/2) morning during Student Resource Time (SRT).  He will also be putting together his coaching staff over the next few weeks as well as take over team workouts during the limited contact period in the next few weeks.  The Warriors open up the 2019 season with their annual scrimmage with Edinburgh HS at Zionsville West MS on Friday, August 16, and then on the road at T.C. Howe CHS in the regular season opener on Friday, August 23.
