The Boys Basketball team’s (12-12) came to an end last night, falling to Monrovia HS (19-6) 71-62 in the IHSAA Sectional #44 final at South Putnam HS.  The win gave the Bulldogs their first sectional title in 19 years.

The game was tight early, as neither team was able to put scoring possessions together in the first few trips down the court.  But the Bulldogs finished the first quarter on a big 14-2 run to give MHS a 19-8 lead after eight minutes.  The run continued into the second quarter, as the hot-shooting Bulldogs scored eight points in the first thirty-eight seconds of the frame.  Despite a small Warriors’ run in the second, Monrovia held a 40-23 lead at halftime.  The teams traded baskets through the first half of the third quarter, with the Bulldog lead growing to 50-30, before CCHS finished the quarter on a 14-5 run to close the gap to 55-44.  The Warriors continued to battle back, cutting the lead to 55-48 with a 3-pointer in the corner from Sophomore Trey Flatt with 6:14 remaining the in the game.  But Covenant could not claw any closer than that, as Monrovia was able to push the lead back out to 14 points with less than two minutes to play.  CCHS scored on several late turnovers by the Bulldogs to cut the final deficit to nine.
