The Boys Basketball team (11-11) struggled to make some easy shots early last night in their first round game of Sectional #44 versus North Putnam HS (7-17), but secured a 65-48 win over the Cougars.  This marked the first sectional win for the Warriors since the 2014-15 season when CCHS defeated Speedway in the first round.

Covenant had defeated NPHS handily early in the season, but the Cougars battled to keep the game close last night.  The Warriors worked for good shots early last night, but could not consistently find the bottom of the basket.  North Put hit a couple of shots early to hold an 8-6 lead late in the first quarter, but CCHS went on a 22-2 run over the end of the first and beginning of the second quarter to push the lead out to 28-10 lead.  Covenant pushed the lead out to 64-39 late in the game before the 65-48 final score.

CCHS had a very balanced scoring attack, as nine of the eleven players scored, and four scored in double figures.  Junior Cam Shurig led with 13 points, followed by Sophomore Trey Flatt (12), Junior Gus Chikamba (11), and Junior Sam Fulbright (10).  Senior Andrew Pickel and brother Freshman Aaron Pickel led North Putnam with 17 and 13 points respectively.

The Warriors now advance to face Cascade HS (5-17) in the semifinals on Friday night at South Putnam HS at 7:30 pm.  CCHS hit a program-record 17 three-pointers last week to defeat Cascade 87-52 on Senior Night.

In the other first round game in Sectional #44 last night, Monrovia HS (17-6) jumped on Cloverdale HS (10-14) early, defeating the Clovers 64-31.  MHS will face the host Eagles (16-6) on Friday night at 6:00 pm.
