The Boys Basketball team (7-7) continued their Jekyll and Hyde second half of the season, as they split their two games last week. On Tuesday night, the Warriors dropped a 76-71 game to Providence Cristo Rey (10-4), and then blew Shortridge HS (5-10) out 67-37 on Saturday night.
CCHS struggled with another slow start against PCR, falling behind 23-15 after the first quarter. Covenant outscored the Wolves each of the last three quarters, but not by enough to pull ahead to stay. The Warriors battled to within a possession and have the ball late in the fourth quarter, but missed a good look that would have given them the lead. Providence hit a couple of foul shots down the stretch to seal the game away. Sophomore Trey Flatt led Covenant scorers with 20 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 6 assists, while Junior Ethan Maudlin scored a career-high 19 points in the loss. Junior Cam Shurig netted 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists in his first game back from a concussion.
The Warriors rebounded on Saturday night, blowing out the Blue Devils of Shortridge HS 67-37. CCHS held a narrow 14-11 lead after the first eight minutes, but outscored SHS 53-26 in the final three quarters for the win. Freshman Brock Buckley led CCHS scorers with 16 points, while Flatt (13), Shurig (11), and Junior Gus Chikamba (11) also all scored in double figures for Covenant. Shurig also pulled down 8 of the Warriors’ 35 boards against the Blue Devils. Sophomore Graham Shelton also recorded 7 rebounds for CCHS.
The Warriors will hit the road for two games this week, facing local rival Speedway HS on Thursday night (6/7:30 pm), and then at Covington HS on Saturday afternoon (1/2:30 pm). Both varsity games will be broadcast live on Indiana Sports Radio Network (SRN).
