The Boys Basketball team (6-6) opened up first round action of the 80th Annual City Tournament last night as the #8 seed, hosting #9 seed Arsenal Tech HS (4-8). The shorthanded Warriors battled throughout, but a fourth quarter rally came up a bit short, as they fell to the Titans 64-57.
Covenant overcame another slow start, as two turnovers in the first two Warrior possessions led to an early 5-0 deficit. CCHS battled back to trail 16-15 after the first quarter. The second quarter was a struggle for Covenant, as Tech outscored the Warriors 15-3 in the frame. Junior forward Noah Hedrick went down in the second quarter with what is believed to be a sprained ankle.
The offensive production yielded better results for CCHS in the second half, as the Warriors poured in 39 second half points, compared to the 18 points that they were limited to in the first half. Covenant cut the Titans’ lead to four with just over two minutes remaining in the game, but just could not quite get over the hump.
Sophomore Trey Flatt scored a game-high 23 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 4 assists, while Senior Jonah Bronger came off of the bench to score 11 points and pull down 8 boards. Freshman Brock Buckley also chipped in 10 points.
The loss eliminates the Warriors from the Tournament, as Tech will advance to face #1 seed Cathedral HS on Thursday night at 6:00/7:30 pm at CHS. Covenant’s JV team also dropped their game to ATHS, falling 62-51.
In other first round action, #10 seed C.A. Tindley AS (7-8) upset #7 seeded Bishop Chatard HS (9-4), 55-47. #6 Heritage Christian (11-2) avoided an upset, squeaking out a 68-66 win over #11 George Washington CHS (7-6) in triple overtime. # 4 Emmerich Manual HS eliminated #13 Scecina Memorial HS (2-12) 77-51, while #3 seed T.C. Howe CHS (9-3) rolled over #14 seed Herron HS, 105-61. Click here for the updated City Tournament bracket.
