The Boys Basketball team (6-5) rallied for a solid Circle City Conference win last night, downing Guerin Catholic HS 54-48.  It was a big win for the Warriors, as they had been scuffling as of late, missing some key players and struggling to play together consistently.  Guerin (8-6) had come into the game playing better as of late, having won five of their previous six games.

The game was a contest which changed pace every couple of possessions.  Both teams liked to get the ball up and down the floor, but the Golden Eagles utilized an active zone defense to try slow the Warriors down and execute a half court offense.  The game was a very tight contest through the first quarter, with GCHS holding onto a 10-8 lead after eight minutes.  The Golden Eagles began to control the boards with their size advantage, pushing their lead out to 24-17 at the half.  Guerin continued to extend that lead early in the third quarter, as their advantage swelled to as many as 12 points.  But Covenant fought back limiting GCHS’ second chance points, and hitting some big shots.  One of those big shots was Sophomore Graham Shelton’s 3-pointer from the top of the key as the buzzer went off to end the third quarter.  That shot cut the deficit to 37-35.  Guerin counter punched to start the fourth, starting the final frame on a 5-0 run.  CCHS limited the Golden Eagles from that point on, rallying yet again to tie the game at 46-46.

The Warriors used a jump trap near midcourt to turn the ball over, leading to a fastbreak layup for Sophomore Trey Flatt.  CCHS then went 4-for-4 from the line down the stretch to help seal the game away.

The win improved the Warriors’ season mark to 6-5 and closes out their conference record at 2-3. Saturday night’s doubleheader against Tri-West HS has been postponed to February 5th due to the winter weather that blanketed Central Indiana on Saturday.

CCHS will enter the 80th annual City Tournament this week.  Covenant will be the #8 seed and will host #9 seeded Arsenal Tech HS (3-8) in the first round on Tuesday at 6/7:30 pm.  The winner will advance to face #1 seed Cathedral HS in the City quarterfinals on Thursday night.
