The Girls Basketball team (13-4) won their first games in the City Tournament this week, advancing the Lady Warriors to the semifinals on Thursday night.
CCHS, the #3 seed for this year’s tournament, opened up on Monday night against the #14 seed George Washington CHS, defeating the Lady Continentals 78-20. Junior Ilani Williams-Harris led the Covenant scoring with 15 points, but CCHS had four players in double figure scoring, with Senior Bailey Everett notching 13 points, Sophomore Bonnie Lew Ludlow chipping in 12, and Sophomore Hana Anderson scoring 11. Everett also contributed 8 assists on the night. The boards were controlled by Junior Sania Borom who grabbed 12 rebounds, while Freshman Samara Douglas pulled down 8 and handed out 4 assists. As a team CCHS went 10-for-18 from behind the arc in the win.
The win advanced the Lady Warriors to the second round, where they hosted C.A. Tindley Accelerated School. Tindley, the #6 seed, knocked off #11 Emmerich Manual in the first round to face Covenant. The Lady Warriors used some early full court pressure to create 18 steals, and shared the ball incredibly well, resulting in 23 assists as a team. The team again shot the ball well, shooting 57% from 2-point range (26-46) and 56% from 3-point range (9-16) on their way to an 86-25 victory. Covenant had five scorers in double figures, led by Junior Sania Borom’s 17 points. She was followed closely by Williams-Harris and Everett with 16 each, Ludlow with 13, and Freshman Anna Guiff who scored a career-high 12 points. Douglas led the way on the glass, grabbing 11 rebounds, while Ludlow tallied 9 boards. Sophomore Hana Anderson, Ludlow, and Everett all handed out four assists, while Williams-Harris and Borom each recorded three assists.
The Lady Warriors will now face #2 Bishop Chatard HS in the semifinals on Thursday night at Cathedral HS at 7:30 pm. Chatard eliminated #7 seed Scecina Memorial HS 74-23 last night. BCHS nipped Covenant 47-41 in their regular season conference matchup earlier this season. On the other side of the bracket, #1 Heritage Christian will square off against #4 Cathedral HS on Thursday at 6:00 pm. HCS defeated #9 Crispus Attucks 61-34 and Cathedral edged #5 Cardinal Ritter HS 61-55 in the quarterfinals last night.
Thursday’s semifinals and the varsity final on Friday night will all be webcast live on Indiana SRN, beginning with the pregame show at 5:40 pm on Thursday night.
The Covenant Junior Varsity team held on for a 42-32 win over Tindley last night, advancing them to also face Bishop Chatard in the semifinals. The game will take place at Cathedral HS in their auxiliary gym on Thursday at 6:00 pm.
