The Boys Soccer team (12-8) won two games yesterday in the IHSAA Class 1A Regional #11 to win their second straight regional championship and third overall in program history. The team, which finished the regular season ranked #12 in the ISCA Class 1A State Rankings due to their incredibly difficult regular season schedule, knocked off the Chargers of Central Christian Academy (12-4), the Sectional #43 champion, 2-0 in the regional semifinal, as well as the Class 1A #1 ranked Seton Catholic HS (18-1), 2-0 in the regional championship. Seton Catholic, the winner of Sectional #42, defeated Sectional #44 champions Greenwood Christian Academy (14-4-1) 1-0 in the other regional semifinal. 2018 IHSAA Class 1A State Tournament bracket.
The Warriors utilized strong ball possession throughout much of both games to put away the wins. That ball control gave CCHS several good scoring opportunities in the first half against the Chargers. Senior Gabe Byrd had a great individual effort to penetrate through three CCA defenders and put the ball in the bottom corner of the net to open the scoring for Covenant with 11:30 to go in the first half. Just a few minutes later, Senior Luke Hastings received a header from his twin Maclain Hastings off of a corner kick, and Luke bodied the ball into the left side of the goal. Despite sloppier ball control in the second half, the Warriors held on for the 2-0 win. CCHS had 25 shots in the semifinal match, with 16 of those on frame. Senior goalkeeper Jacob Susud made two saves in the shutout of Central Christian.
The win advanced the Warriors to the Regional #11 final against #1 ranked Seton Catholic, who was undefeated coming into the match. Again, Covenant dominated possession throughout much of the game, stringing together 200+ passes in the first half and 198 in the second half. CCHS got multiple good scoring opportunities early on. Senior Braden Havics finally put one of those chances away ten minutes into the first half, finishing off a shot off of a pass from Maclain Hastings. The score stayed the same until halftime, but the Warriors did not take much long to score the final goal, as Byrd picked up a cross from Senior Ethan Hurt just a minute into the second half, and put it into the net. The CCHS defense limited the Cardinals’ scoring chances, as Susud again needed to make just two saves for his fourth shutout of the state tournament in 2018.
Covenant will now face Providence HS (12-6) in the Class 1A South Semi-State game at Seymour HS on Saturday, October 20 at 1:00 pm. Providence defeated Rising Sun HS 7-0 in the Regional #12 final. The CCHS/PHS game sets up a rematch of last year’s South Semi-State match, in which Covenant defeated the Pioneers 2-0. CCHS also defeated Providence 1-0 during the regular season this year at PHS on August 25.
