Boys Varsity Football · Defensive Stops Leads to Football Win

The Football team (8-0) came in to Friday’s night as the #9 ranked team in the Indiana Football Coaches Association (IFCA) rankings, facing Traders Point Christian HS (7-1), who was also undefeated and was ranked #16.  Friday night’s game did not disappoint in terms of a close, competitive contest.  CCHS walked away with the win, downing the Knights 21-7.

The game started as a back-and-forth affair, with both teams turning the ball over on their first possessions.  TPC caused a fumble near midfield.  A bad snap and some negative plays pushed the Knights back into their territory, leading to a long pass intercepted by Sophomore Gage Coffey.  After a punt deep into Knights territory, the Covenant defense made another stop and stand.  The Warriors forced the Knights to punt from deep in their end, which was blocked by Sophomore Alex Coleman and recovered by Sophomore Ben Bradley on the TPC 2-yard line.  Senior Jonah Bronger, who rushed for 146 yards on the night on 23 carries, punched the next play into the end zone to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead.  The score stayed that way through more back and forth play and TPC blocking a Covenant field goal attempt, until 34 seconds left in the first half, when a 13 play, 56 yard CCHS drive ended with a nine yard touchdown pass from Sophomore quarterback Austin Frazier to Bronger to put the Warriors up 14-0 at halftime.

The Knights seized the momentum of the game in the third quarter, driving 80 yards on nine plays to punch it in on a 22 yard run off the left side by Freshman Elias Underwood.  That momentum ramped up even more TPC as Junior David Hart intercepted a slant pass on the Warriors’ 27 yard line.  On that ensuing possession for the Knights, Hart took the ball off of the left side into traffic, when Sophomore linebacker Trey Flatt ripped the ball away from Hart and returned it 80 yards for the touchdown and a 21-7 lead.

The Covenant defense stood tall one more time, as Sophomore Jackson Brough and Flatt hit Hart at the CCHS 2-yard line, dislodging the ball and Senior Austin Anderson recovered.  The Warriors gave up 129 yards on the ground, and Hart and the other TP quarterbacks were 13-for-25 for 162 yards, but the Covenant defense made stops when it mattered most, recording six sacks, taking away two fumbles, one interception, and blocking the punt early to set up the first score.

Bronger ended the night with 171 total yards of offense, 146 rushing, 25 receiving, and two touchdowns.  Flatt ended the night with 12 tackles, a fumble recovery, and a touchdown.  Alex Coleman had one sack and the blocked punt.  His brother, Senior Andrew Coleman recorded two sacks, as did Bronger.  Sophomore Kyle Berry also had a sack.

The Warriors will close out the regular season on Friday night, as they host the Eagles of Bowman Academy at 7:00 pm.  The graduating seniors and their families will also be honored, as it is Senior Night.  The game will be broadcast live on Indiana SRN, starting with the pre-game show, Football Friday Night, at 6:00 pm.

The IHSAA will air the state tournament pairings show on Sunday night at 6:00 pm, where the brackets for the 2018 State Football Tournament will be unveiled.  The pairings show will be aired live on the IHSAA Champions Network,
