The Girls Soccer team (7-7-2) picked up a big win on Thursday night, defeating City and sectional rival Cardinal Ritter HS (8-4) 1-0 in the IHSAA Sectional #42 semifinal match.
The Lady Warriors controlled much of the game, totaling seven shots on goal. But the score was 0-0 through regulation and two overtime periods, which sent the game to a penalty kick shootout.
In the shootout, CCHS took the first shot, as Junior Alex David blasted a shot into the top left corner to open the scoring. After Ritter’s first shooter missed her shot high, Covenant Junior Avery Price put another shot in the net to give CCHS the 2-0 advantage. CRHS buried their next shot in the right side of the net to make it 2-1. Lady Warrior Senior Sydney Jones also scored her shot, Covenant’s third, and Sophomore goalkeeper Aliah Minaya made a big save diving to her left to deny the Lady Raiders’ third shot. Junior Lizzy Midla nailed her shot into the top left corner to seal the win for the Lady Warriors, 4-1 in the shootout.
The win advances CCHS to the Sectional #42 final on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 pm. They will face the International School of Indiana (7-2). ISI defeated Speedway HS 2-1 on Tuesday in the first round of the sectional, and then downed Greenwood Christian Academy 4-1 in Thursday’s other semifinal match. The Sectional #42 champion will move on to face the winner of Sectional #41, either Southmont HS (5-10-2) or North Putnam HS. The other side of the Regional #11 bracket at Heritage Christian will be the Sectional #43 winner, either Park Tudor (11-2-3) or Heritage Christian (7-8-2) vs. the Sectional #44 winner, either Union County HS (7-6-1) or Muncie Burris HS (6-5). The regional will be played on Saturday, October 13.
