Last June, the 2023 Covenant baseball team played their final out at Victory Field in the IHSAA 2A State Chmpionship game. Unfortunately, Illiana Christian shut down the Warrior bats and won the game 3-0. The runner-up finish capped a historic postseason run and the Warriors are hungry to get back there this year! Check out this video that documented the championship game: https://vimeo.com/840268861 If the Warriors are going to get another shot at playing for hardware this spring, it will likely come from the contributions and leadership of a strong group of senior ballplayers--five of them in fact. Jack Anderson and Jameson Laughlin will shoulder much of the load on the mound this year in the absence of '23 graduates Ethan Kimmerle and Brad Nardi. Outfielder Nolan Moore is a four-year starter, and he is consistently finding his way on base at the top of the order. Nolan Jones is another four-year starter with a great bat and baseball IQ behind the plate catching. Jones has been earning preseason accolades from various outlets already! Ty Gillespie will provide solid defense up the middle, as he's been doing for the Warriors since his freshman year. Head coach Chris Stevenson embarks on his fourth season leading the program after spending many years as an assistant and JV coach. Stevenson is excited about what the season could hold for this group. "We have a lot of experience, six starters, coming back from last year’s state championship team. I am eager to see how our younger players and new players step up to help us get back to Victory Field," he said. If you watched the video, you might have picked up on the fact that the baseball program is looking far beyond the wins and losses to measure their success. "Our character and spiritual emphasis always revolves around our identity not as baseball players, but as followers of Christ and all that that entails," coach Stevenson added. Like all of our athletics programs here at CCHS, baseball is gearing up for another season full of opportunities to build young men of character, faith, and leadership through sport. Covenant opens the regular season today (3/27) at home against Irvington Preparatory Academy before traveling to Carmel High School on Thursday (3/28) to take on the Greyhounds.
