The start of the 2023-2024 IHSAA boys basketball season is upon us. The Covenant Warriors are ready to open their campaign on the road against Speedway on Tuesday night (11/21). The JV will tip off at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity squad around 7:30. Next year at this time, this game will have a lot more riding on it, with the Warriors set to join the Indiana Crossroads Conference for the 2024-2025 school year and beyond. As it stands, the two teams will be battling only for bragging rights and the potential to open the year in the win column. Last year, Covenant jumped out to their best start in program history winning nine of their first ten games. They won their second Morristown Holiday Tournament in three years. Unfortunately, they won just five of the remaining 14 games of the year, and Park Tudor bounced them from the postseason in the opening round of sectionals. The Warriors graduated a number of seniors, but they will especially miss the leadership of Andrew Crane and Tony Flatt. Stepping into those leadership shoes and likely getting the start in the early going will be seniors Nef Farrell, Paxton Bacon, Jameson Laughlin, and Sam Woehr. Junior Mark Crane will do much of the ballhandling, and junior transfers Nile Hopson and Mell Grandberry will be in the mix off the bench as well. Head Coach Scott Flatt embarks on his 19th season at the helm for the Warriors. In that time, he has compiled an overall record of 214-201. His staff is compiled of CCHS alums Nick Stroud (varsity assistant), Grant Warner (JV head), Ethan Maudlin (JV assistant), and Ethan Smith (freshman assistant). Jemarr Keglar heads the freshman squad. Covenant has an away heavy start to the season. After Speedway, they will travel to Covington (12/1) and Scecina (12/2) before their first home game against Greenwood Christian Academy on December. The December 7 matchup will be Covenant's 2nd Annual "Silent Night" and will feature JV at 4:30, girls varsity at 6:00, and boys varsity at 7:30 p.m. Keep an eye on X and Instagram (@athletics4cchs) and covenantathletics.org for further details about the event!
